Mineralogy and Geology of Turquoise
Mineral formula: CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8 · 4H2O
Grouping: a member of the Turquoise Group
Crystal system: triclinic
Crystal habit: Crystals are rare; usually found as fine granular material, or globular crusts, veinlets, or in massive form.
Cleavage: perfect on {001}, good on {010}, but note that large crystals are uncommon
Fracture: irregular/uneven, sub-conchoidal
Color: shades of sky to bright blue, green, apple green, green gray
Luster: sub-vitreous, resinous, waxy, dull, earthy
Diaphaneity: translucent, transparent or opaque
Moh’s scale hardness: 5 – 6
Streak: pale greenish-blue to white
Specific gravity: 2.6 – 2.8
Named after: French turques or turquois"meaning "Turkish," after the source of the original material found on the south slopes of the Al-Mirsah-Kuh Mountains (Iran), but which found its way to Europe via Turkey. The name was known at least as early as the 17th century C.E.
Geological occurrence: A secondary mineral in potassic alteration zones of porphyry copper deposits. It also occurs as vein fillings in volcanic rocks and phosphate-rich sediments..
