Mineralogy and Geology of Tektite

Tektites are small, often gravel-sized glassy bodies of natural glass formed from terrestrial debris ejected during large impacts. Depending on the nature of the mix of terrestrial debris and meteorite/comet, the composition of tektites is variable. Hence, many varietal names are given to tektites from different localities.

The meteoritic source of some tektites has been determined for three fields of scattered tektites (bediasite and georgiaite in North America, moldavite in Central Europe, and ivorite in West Africa). Though, for Australian and Asian tektites (indochinite, philippinite, australite, zhamanshinite, irghizite, and others), the occurrence in meteoritic craters has only been inferred.

At present, Taos Rockers carries two types of tektites:

Moldavite

Libyan Desert Glass

A type of tektite glass from a strewnfield in the Western Desert of Egypt. The impact origin is disputed, however, by some scientists. The impact site has not been located yet, although there is clear evidence an impact happened.

The major component of Libyan Desert Glass is almost pure molten silica glass, Lechatelierite.

The glass was discovered by the international scientific community in 1932, but it had been used by the Ancient Egyptians as a gemstone.

Libyan desert glass is reputedly the hottest naturally occurring silica, as it contains high-temperature (>1350 °C) oscillatory zoned β-cristobalite (a type of quartz) of magmatic origin.

Spiritual, Metaphysical and Healing Properties

Because of tektite’s outer worldly origin, it is often worked with to enhance communication with other worlds and to connect with higher knowledge. All tektites can promote spiritual growth by enabling the seeker to probe deep into an issue, giving insight into true cause and necessary action.

Tektites can promote balance to energy flow, and balance yin-yang energies (literally, between heaven and earth).
