Named after: An Old English word "seolfor" whose original meaning is now lost. The current spelling "silver" was known as early as 1478. The chemical symbol Ag is based on the ancient Roman name for silver, argentum.
Geological occurrence: in primary hydrothermal veins, as secondary enrichment in host rocks, and as alluvial nuggets.
