Mineralogy and Geology of Goethite

Mineral formula: α-Fe3+O(OH)

Grouping: a member of the Diaspore Group

Crystal system: orthorhombic

Crystal habit: Variable: Prismatic and striated; also flattened into tablets or scales. Velvety aggregates of capillary crystals to acicular and long prismatic forms often radially grouped. Massive, reniform, botryoidal, stalactitic. Bladed or columnar. Compact or fibrous concretionary nodules. Oolitic.

Cleavage: perfect on {010}

Fracture: irregular/uneven

Color: brownish black, reddish black, yellow-brown

Streak: yellowish brown, orange-yellow, ocher-yellow

Luster: adamantine, silky, metallic, or dull

Diaphaneity: opaque

Moh’s scale hardness: 5 – 5 ½

Specific gravity: 4.27 – 4.29

Named after:  the German poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher, politician, and geoscientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in 1806 by Johann Georg Lenz

Type locality:  Hollertszug Mine, Dermbach, Herdorf, Altenkirchen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Geological occurrence: a common secondary weathering product; also occurs as a primary hydrothermal mineral, and in bog and marine environments.

For such an earthy, heavy mineral, goethite is surprisingly good at assisting with all psychic and spiritual endeavors.
