Mineralogy and Geology of Geodes

Geodes are coherent, more-or-less spherical masses of resistant mineral matter that are usually hollow. Since they are usually harder than their matrix, whole geodes weather out of rock exposures and accumulate in talus and canyons. Most are dominantly quartz minerals such as crystalline quartz, chalcedony, agate, common opal, or hyalite, but may also include calcite, pyrite, kaolinite, sphalerite, barite and other minerals.

Named after:  the Greek word γεώδης - ge-ōdēs, meaning "earthlike")

Geological occurrence:

Geodes have been found in regions that have basaltic lavas, where they fill voids left by gas bubbles; in cavities in other types of volcanic rock; and in cavities in sedimentary rocks, especially limestones. Occasionally, geodes may be able to be mined, as in Brazil and Uruguay, when the enclosing rock is easily separable from the geode structure. The geodes form as silica-bearing ground water seeps into the vugs (hollow spaces) and starts to crystallize on the walls, slowly filling the empty space. The color and type of crystalline material lining geodes varies over time resulting in distinctive color patterns.

Geodes are often named according to a particular feature or mineral they exhibit or mention where the particular geodes were found, such as “Baker” geodes (found on the Baker Ranch, New Mexico). Common informal names for geodes include: quartz geodes, amethyst geodes, agate geodes, enhydro geodes, Oco geodes, Keokuk geodes, coconut geodes, or thunder eggs.

Spiritual, Metaphysical and Healing Properties

The properties of geodes reflect the properties of their constituent minerals, usually quartz, chalcedony, agate and common opal. In addition to these energies, crystal energy expert Melody says that geodes facilitate astral travel, and assist in the pursuit of mathematics. They also assist with analysis and decision making, as well as communication skills
