"Aura" quartz (and other crystals) are a lesson in "how do you take a beautiful but possibly dull-looking crystal or crystal cluster and make it colorful and attractive?" Aura quartz shifts the color and appearance of a crystal with a vapor coating of a metal. The mineral is placed in a vacuum chamber. Metals vaporized at high temperature (such as gold, titanium, copper and silver) are introduced. The individual atoms of these metals bond to the surface of the quartz, forming an extremely thin film. This results in “aura” colors, sort of the same as colors in an oil slick on a puddle or wet road. Some of the most popular aura quartz colors are aqua aura (gold) and angel (or opal) aura (platinum).
