Grouping: Member of the apatite group; most apatite is fluorapatite

Crystal system: hexagonal

Crystal habit: Crystals short to long hexagonal prisms; also thick tabular, or low pyramids. Massive, coarse granular to compact.

Cleavage: Poor/indistinct on {0001}

Fracture: irregular / uneven, conchoidal

Color: yellow, blue, green, clear, pink, brown, purple

Streak: white

Luster: vitreous, sub-vitreous, resinous, waxy, greasy

Diaphaneity: transparent, opaque

Moh’s scale hardness: 5

Specific gravity: 3.1 – 3.25

Named after: the Greek ἀπατάω (apatao), to deceive, as apatite was often confused with other minerals such as beryl or milarite. The prefix “fluor” or “chlor” is used to distinguish different compositions.

Type locality: Sauberg Mine, Ehrenfriedersdorf, Erzgebirgskreis, Saxony, Germany.

Geological occurrence: Apatite occurs in almost all igneous rocks, during initial phases of paragenesis, as an accessory mineral, commonly in microscopic crystals, and may occur as very large bodies as late-magmatic segregations in alkaline igneous rocks. Also occurs crystallized in pegmatitic facies of acidic and basic types of igneous rocks. Common in magnetite deposits, and in hydrothermal veins, particularly those formed at high temperatures, and in Alpine cleft-type veins.

Spiritual, Metaphysical and Healing Properties

Yellow apatite supports stimulation of the intellect and helps to dissolve aloofness and negativity. It also stimulates creativity.

When working with other crystals, apatite facilitates results.

Apatite is a humanitarian stone, related to service, especially in the realms of healing, communication, energy balancing and teaching. It assists insight and manifestation.

Blue apatite can be worked with to stimulate development of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience, especially of the devic (fairy) worlds.
