Crystal habit: Prismatic crystals, granular, massive. Commonly forms perthitic intergrowths.

Color: bluish-green to green

Streak: white

Named after: an unspecified type locality area "near" the Amazon River by Johann Friedrich August Breithaupt in 1847.

Geological occurrence: Plutonic felsic rocks, pegmatites, high-grade metamorphic veins, and hydrothermal veins
