Fossil Stromatolite

Stromatolites represent the fossilized remains of one of the oldest life forms on Earth, laminated algal mats. They were thought to be extinct until discovered in Sharks Bay, Australia. 

The algae secrete calcium carbonate (as do many marine algae); this is what is preserved as fossils.
