The Madan ore field is a large lead-zinc mining district known since ancient times and producing through the present day. In excess of 95 metric tons of ore has been produced from more than 40 underground mines. At the 9 September mine, the aerial tram operates 24/7 and is said to have more than 30 miles of workings. Major ore minerals are sphalerite (ZnS), galena (PbS), chlacopyrite (CuFeS2) and pyrite (FeS2)
