Sterling silver feathers inlayed with Sugilite, Opal, and Gaspeite. 30mm long = 3cm.
Silver was known as argentum in ancient Rome, thus its abbreviation as Ag. It is a member of the copper group.
Chemical composition: Ag; Hardness: 2.5-3
Sugilite is a cyclosilicate mineral found in Japan in 1944 and named for the discoverer Ken-ichi Sugi. The original find specimens were of a yellow-ish brown hue but a deposit of deep purple sugilite was found in South Africa in the 1970’s. Purple sugilite has become a somewhat rare and sought after gemstone material.
Chemical composition: K(Na,□)2Li3(Fe,Mn,Al,Zr)2[Si12O30]; Hardness: 6-6.5
Opal is still considered a mineral for historical reasons, although it is amorphous and therefore referred to as a mineraloid. The “opalescent” effect is caused by numerous tiny silica spheres stacked and bonded with silica and water called hydrated silicon dioxide. Once solid, Opal maintains a water content of 3%-21%.
Chemical composition: SiO2 · nH2O; Hardness: 5.5-6.5
Gaspeite is a light green nickel carbonate from the calcite mineral group. Its medium hardness make it ideal for carvings and fashioning into beads and cabochons.
Chemical composition: Ni(CO3); Hardness: 4.5-5
