Amethyst is a variety of Quartz that has a presence of Manganese giving its striking purple color. Varying Iron content causes a color range from pale lavender to deep purple. Amethyst occurs all over the world either in crystalline or massive form and was mentioned as early as 315 B.C. by Theophrastus. It was named for the Greek word “not drunken,” since it was believed to prevent intoxication.
